Streets and Sanitation

The North Side Alliance is a strong advocate for neighborhood cleanliness and sanitation.  We have sponsored a number of clean – up’s and consistently press city officials to increase street sweeping and trash removal resources in our area.   This continues to be a challenge as it is a multi- faceted issue that is difficult to control.      Solar Garbage by northsidealliance.

Tips to Help Prevent Litter

1. Set an example by not littering.

2. Keep a litterbag in your car.

3. Keep your yard clean and free of things that can blow into the street and become litter.

4. When you visit a park or beach, remember to take out what you bring in. Keep trash and recyclables in a bag or backpack until you   can put them in a litter basket.

5. Talk to your family and friends about recycling to reduce the amount of litter you throw away.

6. At home, make sure garbage and recycling bags are tied securely so that loose papers and other items can’t fall out and become litter in your alley.

7. Make sure you close the lid on your refuse containers after depositing your trash or recycling inside. This will prevent refuse from spilling into the alley or street.

8. Do not overfill refuse containers. Exposed garbage will likely result in litter in the alley or street.

9. Remove flyers or take-out menus promptly from your front door before they are blown into the neighborhood as litter.

Why Do People Litter?

1. People litter because they do not feel responsible for public areas like streets and parks. The more they litter, the more it becomes a habit, and the worse the community looks.

2. People usually litter outside their own neighborhood where their trash becomes someone else’s problem.

3. People litter because they believe someone else — a maintenance worker or responsible neighbor — will pick up after them.

4. Once litter starts to pile up, people feel even less responsible for adding to the litter. If an area is clean, people are less likely to litter.

 50th WARD Street Sweeping Schedule

Street sweeping signs posted on your block are enforced from April 1st to November 30th, weather permitting.

To avoid parking tickets, the streets scheduled to be swept should remain clear of vehicles between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

The streets are broken into street sweeping sections. Please review the boundaries in the chart provided to determine the section you reside in and the dates the section has been scheduled for street sweeping. You may also click on the street sweeping map of your ward to see a larger image of the streets in the assigned sections. The street sweeping sections in the chart and the map have corresponding color codes to assist you in finding your street sweeping section. Corresponding alleys are also subject to the street sweeping schedule.

Please be aware that the City’s street sweeping schedule excludes City Holidays.
